12th Grade Checklist

AUGUST
  • Review the class schedule to be certain you are taking courses relevant to post-graduation plans. Be aware of college preparatory requirements.
  • Review post-secondary options available (work force, apprenticeship programs, military, technical school, 2-year college, 4-year college)
  • Set up appointment for taking senior pictures 
  • Young men who turn 18 must register with the Selective Service; failure to do so may result in future problems with applying for financial aid
  • Register for ACT or SAT if you need it.  

SEPTEMBER
  • Attend a career/college fair at a local college
  • Plan to do a campus visit at the school you are interested in
  • Scholarships are an ongoing process throughout the school year; seniors should be checking out the scholarships coming into the school (counseling office and webpage)
  • Meet with the counselor to review graduation and future plans
  • Look into ACT/SAT Test preparation workshops. Consider registration dates for anticipated test dates.  

  WORK FORCE PLANS
  • Create a Career Portfolio
    •  Resume
    •  Letters of recommendation 
    • Copies of high school transcript
  • Explore the job market and career opportunities

MILITARY OPTIONS
  • Seniors choosing this route should have already explored all the military options and be working with one particular recruiter
  • Take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB testing will be November 6th at 8:00 am in the Media center) 

TECHNICAL SCHOOL PLANS
  • Visit school campuses (set up appointments through the Admissions Office of that campus)
  • Listen and watch for school representatives who visit the school. 
  • Compare schools and programs; make determinations as to which your student should apply
  • Student should begin to fill out application forms (which may be found in the Counseling Office, online  or may be obtained directly from the school)
  • Contact the school(s) to ask about specific scholarship programs they may have available

2-YEAR AND 4-YEAR COLLEGE PLANS
  • Visit school campuses (set up appointments through the Admissions Office of that campus)
  • Listen and watch for school representatives who visit the school. 
  • Compare schools and programs; make decisions as to which school(s) your student should apply
  • Students should begin to fill out application forms (which may be found in the Counseling Office, online  or may be obtained directly from the school)
  • Contact the school(s) to ask about specific scholarship programs they may have available
  • Note ACT and SAT test dates and registration deadlines (depending on the school’s preference, taking one of these tests is required at all 4-year colleges and most 2-year colleges). 

OCTOBER
  • High school transcripts should be sent to any employer, school, military office, or scholarship competition requesting them
  • Seniors should check out scholarship opportunities posted every week
  •  Retake the ACT or SAT, if needed
  • Seniors choose the best people for letters of recommendation and ask their permission at least two weeks before any deadlines; provide them with necessary forms
  • Listen and watch for school and military representatives who visit the school
  • If you are planning to compete in Division I or II athletics, you will need to register with the  NCAA Clearinghouse

NOVEMBER
  • Scholarships!
  • Seniors may make arrangements to take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB-November 6th, 2013; 8:00am)
  • Consider sending off school application forms if this has not already been done
  • Listen and watch for school and military representatives who visit the school
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences
  • Minnesota College Application Week(most application fees to MN Colleges are waived during this week) 

DECEMBER
  • Scholarships!
  • School application forms may be sent out at this time
  • Begin to gather tax information, as financial aid forms will need to be filled out in January!
  • Listen and watch for school and military representatives who visit.  

JANUARY
  • Attend the Financial Aid Night held in the Memorial School Media Center
  • Complete FAFSA and any other specific financial form a school may want from you.
  • Scholarships! Watch for deadlines
  • Local scholarships will be available to students towards the end of the month. These are due in March.
FEBRUARY/MARCH/APRIL
  • Scholarships! Meet deadlines and due dates!
  • Finalize all post-high school plans
  • Graduation caps, gowns and announcements will be arriving in the school store
  • Check with your college of choice for priority filing deadlines for Financial Aid.    

MAY
  • Senior Awards Program will be announced
  • Scholarships! 
  • Graduation! 
  • Graduates should notify the counselor about sending FINAL TRANSCRIPTS to any school they plan to attend in the fall.
