10th Grade Checklist

AUGUST
  • Review your 10th grade class schedule to be certain you are taking courses relevant to current post-graduation plans and courses that explore career options.
  •  Explore career options available (work force, apprenticeship programs, military, technical school, 2-year college, 4-year college). Keep in mind that you may change your career plans many times throughout the high school years, this is okay!

SEPTEMBER
  • Utilize various career/computer program to explore options (the programs provide career interest inventories, a list of possible career choices matching the student’s interests, and can search for schools that provide training for any type of career choice).
  • The Counseling Office and the Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS)  have a wealth of information regarding careers and schools; students and parents are welcome to visit them! 
  • Representatives from various schools and military branches schedule visit throughout the year; visits are announced in the Daily Bulletin and on the whiteboard located in the Counseling Office. Representatives can be found outside the Counseling Office during their scheduled visits.
  • September to May: discuss with teachers, counselors any concerns you may have about grades and academic achievement

OCTOBER
  • Sophomores will take the PLAN which is a preliminary ACT (one of two college entrance tests). The PLAN will compare student's test scores to other college-bound sophomores, familiarize the student with the ACT, help students plan for future learning and explore the world of work through a career interest inventory.

NOVEMBER
  • Watch for school/military representatives.
  • Check out resources available through the Counseling Office, online, and MCIS
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences.

DECEMBER


JANUARY


FEBRUARY
  • Select courses for next school year. Help your student(s) choose courses appropriate for their goals (graduation and careers). Parents need to sign registration folder. 
  • PLAN test results are interpreted before  the registration process by the counselor during advisory
  • If you are planning to take Concurrent Enrollment courses or PSEO, you will need to pass the Accuplacer test and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. The Accuplacer will be held in February and again in April.
MARCH
  • Watch for scholarships, leadership, summer opportunities
  • Watch for school/military representatives
APRIL
  • Watch for scholarships, leadership, summer opportunities.
  • MCA Reading Testing and MCA Science Test

MAY
  • Watch for scholarships, leadership, summer opportunities.
  • Watch for school/military representatives
  • Start or maintain volunteer experiences.
  • Join or continue with school/community organizations.
  • Continue to set goals for academic and personal success, revise as needed.
  • Take responsibility for making appointments, learning about budgets, finance.
  • Explore the possibility of a summer job experience.
  • Start a resume and continue to add items as you progress through school (activities, leadership roles, work, volunteer; contact people).
  • Continue to maintain and nurture a positive image; others will notice and they can be helpful later when a lending hand or a letter or recommendation is needed.
